The Five Stages of Writing a Novel | HuffPost UK

But the publishing industry has changed dramatically in the last few years, and self-publishing your own book is becoming more the norm rather than the exception. As more and more writers become indie authors, and as current self-published authors learn to adopt professional publishing practices, indie authors will capture an increased share of the market. Being an author who writes books gives you loads of credibility, authority, and name recognition. Writing a book related to your profession or expertise will make the book like a calling card for potential clients and a way to generate new business. Know how to write a book allows you to be viewed as an expert and someone who carries some clout in the industry.

How to Write a Book (For Beginners)

We all have a novel in us, or so they say. The problem is, for most people, writing a novel isn't that easy.

The Snowflake Method For Designing A Novel

Few things in life are more daunting than attempting to write a novel. Leaving aside the amount of words you have to write novels are usually around 80, - , words , there's the enormity of having to create an entire world, peopled by characters that have come straight out of your imagination. Most difficult of all, you have to keep that world spinning; keep it interesting, keep the twists and turns coming, right up to the very end. Like any major undertaking, the easiest way of novel-writing is to break it down. Rather than thinking of it as Everest, give yourself five separate stages to hit. Not exactly baby steps, more individual, knuckle-clenching hikes. No-one said this was going to be fun.

Read about the 4 stages below. Then tell us which one fits best for you and what your next steps are. This can look like day dreaming, brainstorming by yourself or with others, research, and jotting down notes. In this phase, there is no right way to do it , but there are steps you can take to brainstorm as much as the story as your creativity and enthusiasm can bear. Some writers write their story in linear order.

Writing a novel is easy. Writing a good novel is hard. Frankly, there are a thousand different people out there who can tell you how to write a novel. There are a thousand different methods. The best one for you is the one that works for you.

If you're reading the Books section of any given website, you've probably written a novel , thought about writing a novel, or sat through one too many brunches with friends who are working on their novels. Unless you're just a voracious reader who doesn't bother with the whole pretentious writing thing. In that case, I love you. Novel-writing may sound terribly elite, but it's actually a pretty popular — and populist — hobby. Take National Novel Writing Month , for example, where thousands of often unpublished writers crank out a novel in 30 days flat, or the hilarious new book Working on My Novel , which collects Tweets containing the phrase "working on my novel" the irony is, of course, that those people often aren't. It's easy to start a novel, and easier still to claim you're working on a novel.
