bible - Why did Jesus not write any scripture himself? - Christianity Stack Exchange

I have mentioned two apocryphal letters forged in the name of Jesus himself, one written to a King Abgar and the other, well, dictated to the cherubim in heaven from the cross. Several readers have asked me about New Testament examples, one in the famous story of the woman taken in adultery in John 8, and the other the seven letters allegedly dictated by Christ in Revelation It is a scribal addition to the story. BTW: one recent NT scholar, Chris Keith, has written an entire book arguing that the passage was inserted by scribes precisely to show that Jesus was able to write! The story of Jesus and the woman taken in adultery is arguably the best known story about Jesus in the Bible; it certainly has always been a favorite in Hollywood versions of his life. Despite its popularity, the account is found in only one passage of the New Testament, in John , and it appears not to have been original, even there. The rest of this post is for blog members only.

The author identifies himself as "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ ," who is writing to "the twelve tribes scattered abroad" James The epistle is traditionally attributed to James the brother of Jesus James the Just , [1] [2] and the audience is generally considered to be Jewish Christians , who were dispersed outside Palestine. Framing his letter within an overall theme of patient perseverance during trials and temptations , James writes to encourage his readers to live consistently with what they have learned in Christ. He wants his readers to mature in their faith in Christ by living what they say they believe. He condemns various sins , including pride , hypocrisy , favouritism , and slander. He encourages and implores believers to humbly live by godly, rather than worldly wisdom and to pray in all situations.

Gospel [Notes 1] originally meant the Christian message itself, but in the 2nd century it came to be used for the books in which the message was set out. Modern scholars are cautious of relying on them unquestioningly, but critical study attempts to distinguish the original ideas of Jesus from those of the later authors. The Greek term was Latinized as evangelium in the Vulgate , and translated into Latin as bona annuntiatio. The written accounts of the life and teaching of Jesus are also generally known as "Gospels". The Gospel of Mark probably dates from c. In the immediate aftermath of Jesus' death his followers expected him to return at any moment, certainly within their own lifetimes, and in consequence there was little motivation to write anything down for future generations, but as eyewitnesses began to die, and as the missionary needs of the church grew, there was an increasing demand and need for written versions of the founder's life and teachings.

The Epistle to the Hebrews is perfectly written at the highest intellectual level, and yet its authorship is a complete mystery. Not even modern, sophisticated analysis of authorship can suggest a plausible writer for this great work. Whoever wrote this apparently wrote virtually nothing else.

What is the best way for someone to ensure that a record of his life, teachings, and achievements should live on after he himself is departed? The most obvious answer—write a book. There is much to be said for writing your own biography rather than leaving someone else to do it. The story of his life is recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. In the gospel accounts we learn that Jesus honored, revered, and read Scripture the Old Testament in the synagogue. He told the two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 that they were slow of heart to believe all that the prophets had written about himself in the Old Testament.
