BES Gender, School and Society (IGNOU Help book for BES in Hindi Medium) - werdec.orgIn Hollywood , in the news , in classrooms and in boardrooms , important and historic conversations are taking place. The narrative surrounding gender equality, a conversation seemingly as old as time itself, has taken center stage in the global consciousness bringing new eyes and a new generation of leaders and advocates to the fore. There is however an important distinction that needs to be understood—gender equality and gender equity are related terms but have different meanings. While the words sound similar, the definitions and practical usage are different. Gender equity means fairness of treatment for men and women according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities.

Feminist critics of polygyny—also called plural marriage, consisting of one man and more than one wife—have enumerated the ways that it is bad for women. Feminist scholar Susan Moller Okin argued that polygyny is fundamentally about men controlling women. Likewise, media coverage of polygyny often decries the ways that polygynous wives are indoctrinated and brainwashed. The underlying question is: why would a woman choose this patriarchal family structure in which she has to share her husband with other wives? In , I conducted ethnographic research in Utah, including 21 interviews with 36 participants who were in current or former plural marriages some interviews were one-on-one, and some were with the husband and wives as a group. In , the Mormon Church abandoned the practice, after which a Mormon fundamentalist movement grew that sees plural marriage as a requirement to enter the highest levels of paradise.
