Dan Gutman born October 19,  is an American writer, primarily of children's fiction. Gutman was born in New York City, moving with his family a year later to Newark, New Jersey , where on June 1, , his father abandoned the family. Gutman was a magazine editor and columnist. While editor-in-chief of Stag , he became a fan of video games and launched a video-game magazine. I started writing about them and computers. All for grownups. It took me a long time to realize that writing for grownups was not my thing.

In , Dan cooked up a novel about a boy who finds the most valuable baseball card in the world, and discovers he has the power to travel through time using a baseball card like a time machine. Rejected by ten publishers over two years, the book was finally published in by HarperCollins Children's Books.
