No More Boys and Girls – ReviseSociologyThis is not surprising. This translates to such things as painting the pink and blue coat cupboards a universal orange and no longer segregating children according to gender, or introducing the kids to people who have jobs they might not expect, such as a female mechanic or a male dancer, or reading them stories in which the princess is also the hero of the story, and does not need rescuing by a prince. Potentially very harmful, indeed. According to the various scientists and medical professionals Abdelmoneim interviews, there is no biological reason that these should be pre-determined. Yet adults unwittingly pander to these stereotypes. The babies dressed as girls get dolls and fluffy animals; those dressed as boys are handled more roughly, and put on bikes. But this has a darker side.

No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free?
Can our kids go gender free? The rational for doing this research now is that these children have lived their entire lives under the equality act, which was passed in , emphasizing that men and women should be treated the same. Here is said video:. The documentary finding, however, suggest that this is far from the case, and there are several differences in terms of attitudes about what boys and girls should do, and how the teachers treat boys and girls. Dr Javid visits a neuro-scientist who helpfully tells us that there appears to be very few structural differences in the brains of boys and girls, and thus gender differences are not biologically determined, but exist because of socialisataion — their experiences have taught them different skills and different mental attitudes. Dr Stella Something now comes in from the UCL psychometric lab to subject boys and girls to what seems to be a pretty rigorous series of activities aimed to measure…. Another, very similar year 3 class which had a regular 6 weeks of teaching was also tested alongside the experimental group to act as a control.
They are such funny, engaging and intelligent girls. Is this really challenging these boys? In one instance, an experiment was conducted whereby the gender of a small handful of babies was swapped with female toddlers who were passed off as boys, and vice versa, through a change in clothing and name. The children were placed on a rug with toy robots and cars, dollies and soft toys, and adult volunteers with no relationship with these children were asked to interact with the child. Dr Javid Abelmoneim is on a mission to prove that the way we treat boys and girls in childhood has a profound impact on the roles men and women play in society. To test his theory, Dr Abelmoneim took over a class of seven year-olds from Lanesend School on the Isle of Wight, stripping away pink, blue and other less obvious manifestations of traditional gender roles from the class room. The results of his experiment, which saw all 23 pupils receive gender neutral treatment will be shown in the two-part BBC Two series. At the beginning of episode one, the children undergo psychometric tests to assess their perception of sex and gender. Despite their young age many of the pupils already perceive a significant difference between the two sexes.
