Author Rick Riordan, a former middle-school social studies teacher, stated that the idea for The Kane Chronicles came from his realization that the only ancient history subject more popular than Ancient Greece was Ancient Egypt. The idea of having two multiracial siblings narrate the books also came from his experience as a teacher.

On October 5, , during his book tour for The Sword of Summer, Rick Riordan announced a compilation of all the crossover stories titled Demigods and Magicians , released on April 5, Annabeth Chase dreams of her mother, Athena, telling her that there is trouble brewing. When they become trapped on the island by Setne who is attempting to become a god using spells in the Book of Thoth , they try to contact Carter and Sadie Kane but fail.

He is unexpectedly swallowed by an enormous crocodile in the marshes at the edge of Moriches Bay on Long Island's south shore while exploring, but is saved by a strange older teenager who forces the monster to regurgitate him. The teenager turns out to be Percy Jackson. After a brief disagreement that leave both confused about the other's origins, Percy and Carter decide to team up to deal with the monster, which has left them and is terrorizing a nearby suburban neighborhood.
